The Moose Monster
Overview:
Drawing 62 pounds at 28 inches this is a 64 inch long hickory recurve bow. It has moose antler tip overlays and hoof prints carved into the cambium on the back.
The Wood: Hickory holds world records in flight archery and is one of the highest density and most durable bow woods in North America. Hickory is best suited for cold and dry environments. It is not the best for high humidity environments because it absorbs moisture out of the air and can become sluggish.
The Design: This bow is a long narrow tipped recurve to maximize smoothness in draw and to minimize limb mass, creating a sweet shooting, hard hitting hunting bow. Sweeping recurves reduce string angle at full draw, reducing stack in draw weight and adding more potential energy to at brace height. 62 pounds is plenty for moose hunting but manageable for a strong archer to practice with.
Finishing Touches: I often leave cambium camo on the back of my hickory bows. This time I shaved off all of the cambium except for pieces stenciled to look like moose hooves. This took longer than the actual bow build. Moose antler tips protect the wood from the string. I wood burned the silhouette of my 2024 moose.
I built this bow to be exactly what I would want for hunting moose in the north woods. It was a tedious build but it turned out beautifully and would be a great fit for a strong archer who hunts in the cold.
