Kenai River Birch

This is a 64 inch long flat limbed long bow drawing 35 pounds at 28 inches.  It is made out of Kenai Birch, a subspecies of Paper Birch, and has a Caribou Antler Tine Arrow Rest.  The Belly of this bow has been fire hardened to a golden brown color like a perfectly toasted marshmallow.

The Wood: Birch is an extremely tension strong wood that can handle tight bends.  However, the Birch is naturally compression weak so it requires a heat treat to crystalize the cells on the belly of the bow.  Birch oil is extremely flammable and it has taken me many tries to perfect the perfect heat treat without catching the bow on fire.  The result is a very snappy lightweight bow that feels like a feather in my hand compared to other bow woods.

The Design: This is a very simple straight limed long bow.  Just long enough to avoid string follow after a hard day of shooting but short enough to be nimble in the woods.  The handle is a pistol grip with a deep thumb grove to promote a consistent hand position and increase accuracy.

Finishing touches:  This bow is simple, with no extras besides a antler tine arrow rest.  The smooth antler is the same diameter as the wooden arrows I shoot and is a very low friction surface for the arrows to slide across.  An oiled finish brings out the golden brown color of heat treated birch, and a fine camo pattern of cambium is left on the back.

This is a great small to medium sized game hunting bow.  It is extremely accurate and light as a feather.  This would  be a great bow for a northwoods hunter who prioritizes accuracy over frills.
